It is a term used to describe the use of materials and techniques which preserves and provides protection to artwork. It ensures that all the materials used in framing and matting will not harm the artwork, and will, as much as possible, protect the artwork from physical damage. In addition, preservation framing protects the integrity and value be it monetary or emotional of all your artwork, photographs and memorabilia, not only for your own enjoyment but also for the next generation. Here at Kamena Gallery we are trained in the proper techniques and materials needed for conservation framing. Come see us to discuss conservation options for your next framing project! Displaying memorabilia in a frame enjoys tremendous popularity. Sport objects, collectors plates, medals and clothing pieces are just a sample of the huge number of objects regularly displayed. Shadow box frames can take those treasured articles out of a drawer or box and put them on a wall to be admired every day. Customized frames, both in size and depth, can be made to frame anything from a baby's soother to a full size guitar. info & pricing... This process is used on only select forms of artwork in order to achieve a finished product that is flat & creaseless, ready to frame or hang on your wall. Different artwork that requires stretching is canvas, needlework, cross-stitch, rice paper and fabric, such as tapestry's or scarfs. The most common of these is canvas stretching. This process wraps the canvas around stretcher bars (Popular wood) that usually have a depth of 3/4 of an inch, which will leave the white border around the image visible on the sides of the stretcher bars. Thus still requiring the canvas to be framed after in order to have the best visually appealing look hanging on your wall. If you do not want a frame, you have the option of getting your canvas stretched as a "gallery wrap". This process again wraps the canvas around stretcher bars, but doesn't leave any of the white border around the image showing. The image itself is wrapped around the bars, which can have a depth of 3/4, 1 1/2 or 2 inches, depending on your tastes. With this process you can directly hang the canvas on your wall without a frame, but you also still have the option of adding a frame if you wish. Which is the most popular choice when wanting to create a floating look for your canvas. To see what technique would work best for your artwork, come into Kamena Gallery to talk to the experts! Dry Mounting is the process of affixing artwork to foam board, called FoamCore, or some other flat, firm substrate, such as a mat. This is done by placing mounting tissue between the image and backing which melts and adheres the two under high temperature in a mounting press. The benefit of Dry Mounting is that it provides a uniform coat of adhesive to cover the back of artwork for a flat, firm mount with no danger of the artwork buckling or slumping at a later date. The downside of this process is that it is difficult to remove the artwork after without if being damaged. Archival Mounting is the same process as dry mounting, but using a foamcore and mounting tissue that is acid-free archival quality. Plaque mounting is an attractive, yet economical alternative to framing, as there is no frame or glass. The artwork is mounted and laminated onto a custom cut MDF board that is 3/8" thick with a beveled edge and comes with a slot in the back for easy hanging. The end result is a very durable and eye-catching presentation of the work, that's also easy to clean, with only a damp cloth. Flush mounting is the same process as plaque mounting, with the only difference being the thickness of the MDF board the artwork is mounted on. Flush mounting is onto MDF board that is 1 3/16" thick, whereas plaque mounting is only 3/8" thick. |
